A little known fact that was really passed under the gaming radar was the promotion of Lionhead Studios’ head honcho Peter Molyneux to “Creative Director” of Microsoft Europe. And according to an interview he gave with gamesindustry.biz this week, he is still going to head that studio as well as work on the “re-branding” so-to-speak of Microsoft Game Studios.
During the interview, Peter was asked about consolidating everyone into the MGS umbrella a little tighter. His response specifically included the internet-maligned studio Rare, who was mysteriously quiet during E3:
I know what you mean by that, but actually one of the things I really want to do is help Rare have more of an identity. And make sure the people at Rare are seen more within the industry. I was totally blown away from the amount of talent that there is at Rare, but it’s just that they come from a background where Nintendo required them to be this very, very secretive company. I just want to give them the confidence to tell the world what they’re doing. I hope you’re going to see more from Rare and I want to help them get well known. But you’ll definitely still recognise a Rare game.
Peter, we have some ideas for you if you would like any help getting Rare going again. For starters, it’s time for a new Perfect Dark game. You could get on the phone with Nintendo and hammer out whatever you need to in order to get GoldenEye on Xbox Live Arcade. Oh, and Mike’s wife wants a sequel to Grabbed by the Ghoulies. Hey, there were people that played that game.
Good luck Peter! We’re looking forward to seeing the resergence of Micrsoft Game Studios.
